Buddhist Zen temple fish gong.
Wooden gongs like this were used to let the monks know when it was time to complete tasks. They can have more elaborate carving,(Like the one hanging in the Gardner museum) but this one is from a country temple in Shiga and very simple. Great Mingei piece with original hammer.

Large stone Shiga 19th C. garden frog.
Symbol of fertility and good fortune. Also because return and frog are both pronounced the same in Japanese they associate the frog with the act of one safely returning home. Often seen in Japanese temple gardens and in front of Japanese homes.
