KYO GAR044Dated 1696 Edo period 9 feet Stone Lantern
A Beautiful 9 feet tall Shrine stone lantern collected at Kyoto Auction.

Below information is carved on the pole stone.
"Donation for Toushou Gu Shrine.
The 9th year in Genroku era (1696), April 17th.
Donated by Minamotono Yoritaka, the Feudal Load of Iyo Region (current Ehime prefecture in Shikoku)"

Toushou Gu was a type of Shinto shrine which commemorate the 1st Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu who died in 1616. All the regional feudal loards built Toushou Gu in their region to show their obedience to the Tokugawa government. There used to be about 500 Touoshou Gu in Japan in Edo period, however most of them were combined and reduced in Meiji period (late 18th century) to current 130 shrines.
